Alder Hey Children’s NHS Foundation Trust (Alder Hey) has enhanced patient safety and clinical documentation within its Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) through ongoing developments to BadgerNet Neonatal. Led by Adam McNeill and the PICU Badger team, the Trust has introduced a series of innovations that provide clinicians with both a clear snapshot of critically unwell patients and a detailed record of care.

Clinicians Need Accurate and Comprehensive Patient Information

Caring for critically unwell children and young people requires accurate, accessible, and comprehensive patient information. Clinical teams need a system that supports rapid decision-making while maintaining a detailed record of treatment and care throughout a patient’s journey.

At the same time, the Trust sought to ensure essential patient information was available at the point of care, while continuing to strengthen patient safety and documentation standards.

Delivering Improvements Using BadgerNet Neonatal

Alder Hey’s PICU Badger team worked closely with multiple teams and technology vendors to develop and deliver a range of improvements within BadgerNet.

A key development was the integration of patient observations, which required collaboration across several teams to create an effective solution. Clinical reviews of charts by different departments helped ensure relevant information was available when and where clinicians needed it.

The team has also driven innovation through the development of an Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) console and integration with the Trust’s Ambient Voice Technology. These developments help support clinical workflows while ensuring accurate and comprehensive documentation.

Supporting Safer Care Across the Trust

The work delivered by the PICU Badger team has had a measurable impact on patient safety and clinical practice.

The team is regularly recognised within Trust patient safety meetings for the support it provides to frontline staff. Ongoing audits of clinical documentation demonstrate the effectiveness of the developments and show sustained improvements over time.

By providing both a concise overview of complex patients and a detailed record of care, the solution helps clinicians access the information they need to support safe and effective decision-making.

Driving Innovation beyond Alder Hey

The team’s work extends beyond Alder Hey. Adam McNeill and the PICU Badger team regularly participate in System C events and showcase their innovations at national conferences, sharing learning and demonstrating how digital innovation can support safer care for children and young people.
