We spoke to Ruth Stokes, Clinical Safety Officer, and Lana Mitchell, Digital Matron, from The Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust about their CareFlow Electronic Patient Record (EPR) journey and their experiences along the way.

From introducing new digital systems to involving clinicians throughout the programme, they shared what the journey had looked like for their teams and what they had learned from it.

Royal Wolverhampton’s CareFlow EPR Journey

The Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust was midway through its EPR journey when we spoke to Ruth Stokes and Lana Mitchell. Phase one included CareFlow Patient Administration System, CareFlow Emergency Department and Theatres, marking a significant change from processes that had previously relied on a combination of paper processes and separate systems.

Ruth and Lana talked us through the journey so far…

Putting Clinicians at the Heart of Change

Clinical involvement had been an important part of the programme from the beginning. Digital clinicians were positioned across different areas, helping to provide clinical oversight from design and testing all the way through to implementation.

Ruth and Lana shared more about how that clinical involvement had shaped the configuration and workflows behind the programme.

Making Clinical Information More Visible

Moving from paper to digital processes had also changed how clinical information could be accessed and used. Digitising patient observations made information more visible to clinicians and created opportunities to analyse data and feed it directly into Trust dashboards.

They then explained what greater access to real-time information had meant for clinical decision-making.

Learning From the Journey

Their CareFlow EPR journey had brought significant change, giving the team plenty of experience to reflect on as the programme progressed.

Looking back on that experience, Ruth and Lana shared what they had learned along the way and their advice for others starting a similar journey.
