The Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust (SaTH) has launched the initial phase of its new electronic patient record (EPR) system. it introduced a new patient administration system (PAS) powered by System C’s fully integrated CareFlow EPR technology.
Digital Transformation with CareFlow EPR
The use of CareFlow EPR has replaced the trust’s 20-year-old PAS system. This involved the seamless migration of over one million patient records and comprehensive training for more than 5,000 staff. As part of the complex data transfer, System C and the trust migrated over 70 million line items from SaTH’s legacy PAS database into the new EPR.
The adoption of CareFlow EPR is the cornerstone of a comprehensive digital transformation and enhancement strategy for the trust. The digitalisation programme will modernise how the trust stores, facilitates and accesses patient records at Princess Royal Hospital in Telford and the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital. This will help standardise how patient information is managed across the SaTH sites. It will also drive the trust forward in realising its longer-term digital ambitions.
The next phase of the improvement programme has already commenced, with multiple projects included in the digital roadmap.
Actively Transforming Shrewsbury & Telford Hospital NHS Trust
The full roll-out of CareFlow EPR will incorporate an integrated results reporting solution and clinical narrative; a function which will allow clinicians to capture and share information in real-time. This eliminates relying on information traditionally held on paper notes. This includes assessments and charts. The deployment will also integrate CareFlow EPMA (electronic prescribing and medicines administration), paving the way for the elimination of paper-based prescriptions.
Nigel Lee, Director of Strategy and Partnerships at SaTH, said: “We are actively transforming our digital services. Our intention is to make the right information available to the right people, in the right place, at the right time. Our number one priority is to improve the quality, safety and experience of care that we provide to our patients.
“CareFlow EPR plays a crucial role in our digital transformation, establishing essential foundations for upcoming digital enhancements. It will facilitate improved flow within our hospitals. It will also promote more integrated collaboration among our teams and local health and care partners.”
System C’s Role & Commitment
Nick Wilson, CEO of System C, added: “Achieving higher levels of digital maturity to enhance patient outcomes is a key ambition for all healthcare providers. We’re honoured to have been chosen by SaTH to support its digital transformation programme. Together, System C and the trust achieved the highest level of data migration compliance that I am aware of, building a solid foundation for embedding the new system into operational use. It follows the trust’s recently improved CQC rating which I’d like to also congratulate them on.
“We have recently invested heavily in the development of CareFlow EPR and our rapid deployment programme, so to see our solutions being implemented to this scale at SaTH is really pleasing. People and purpose are at the heart of the way we deploy our software. We’ve used this approach to prioritise the improvements made for SaTH and our other customers. The PAS data migration has set the bar for the wider implementation. I’m confident that our collective team will ensure the trust realises the benefits of its new EPR as soon as possible.”
