Sarah Scales is a paediatric nurse by background and has been a qualified nurse for 17 years, spending the last twelve years at the University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust. She is currently a Digital Nurse Specialist and was recently promoted from a Band 6 to a Band 7 nurse in April 2023.
Introduction to Digital Leadership
Sarah’s divisional lead during her time in paediatric care was an alumna of the Aspiring Digital Leadership Programme and completed the supporting scholarship with a passion for Florence Nightingale’s legacy. Recognising Sarah’s digital role and her potential, the divisional lead encouraged Sarah to apply for the programme by sending her the link. With help from a sponsorship from System C, Sarah was successfully accepted into the programme.
One of the first things Sarah noticed about the programme was how well each participant got along with each other, regardless of their seniority. The diverse backgrounds and professions of her peers allowed Sarah to build a network of individuals on similar digital journeys. This experience made her realise the broad community of professionals undergoing digital transformation.
A Focus on Self Development
Throughout the Aspiring Digital Leadership Programme, Sarah focused on self-development and self-awareness. She initially found it challenging to adjust her communication style, as she typically speaks quickly. The programme’s hosts encouraged her to speak more slowly and clearly, which was a significant adjustment for her. Additionally, she discovered her lack of confidence in virtual communication platforms like Microsoft Teams, as she noticed that she relied heavily on hand gestures when speaking.
The programme also helped Sarah develop key confidence-building skills. She learned the importance of setting boundaries by realising that it is okay to say no. This newfound ability to prioritize her commitments has helped her progress in her career as a Digital Nurse Specialist.
Career Achievements & Future Aspirations
After completing the programme, Sarah found new opportunities with the Paediatric Early Warning Score (NPEWS) and NHS England. Embracing every chance, she could, she led multiple projects and even spoke at a national conference in Glasgow in May 2023.
Looking ahead, Sarah has plans to continue in her digital journey by continuing as a Digital Nurse Specialist and in the Florence Nightingale Scholarship. She aspires to lead her own project, leveraging the skills and confidence she gained from the Aspiring Digital Leadership Programme to make a significant impact in her field.
“It has made me learn (from the Aspiring Digital Leadership Programme] to say no, because I used to say yes to everything, but then I’ve also learnt to say yes when it’s right because it can help you progress further.”
