Renée Hall is a midwife by background and her digital career started from a secondment on a maternity EPR project. This was over a 12-month period and helped Renée learn lots of new things, face challenges and open lots of doors for her to begin a new journey.
Overcoming Challenges In A New Role
Renée is an Associate Nurse Informatics Officer and has been for over 4 years. She notes that her role has come with a whole wealth of new challenges to overcome being a midwife in a nursing world. One of these challenges is ‘imposter syndrome’ and the fact that as she became more educated, she became more aware of everything digital and what its potential is. She also learnt more about her transferable knowledge and skills. Renée is motivated to try bringing new people and trusts on the journey to digital and create a space where they can witness the benefits of digital first hand.
The Aspiring Digital Leadership Programme
Renée was sponsored by System C to go on the Florence Nightingale Foundation led Aspiring Digital Leadership Programme to help elevate her confidence and build on her inexperience with digital technology. Renée struggled to find her feet as she joined the team during COVID where she was instantly submerged in the deep end. The Aspiring Digital Leadership Programme gave Renée an opportunity to gain experience in her role as the effect of COVID began to die down.
The Aspiring Digital Leadership Programme provided many different benefits to Renée and her career, which included networking. She managed to communicate with a variety of different trusts and fellow colleagues about their experiences in procuring digital systems. This allowed her to pick up hints, tips, and guidance on tackling issues from a unique perspective. Renée’s newfound support network still communicates via WhatsApp to this very date.
Renée became a Florence Nightingale Foundation 23/24 Digital Leadership Scholar, as she decided to elevate to the next level. The programme really helped her self-awareness and the feeling that she had some extra tools in her box. Including, confidence, people-skills, and presentation skills.
Without the help of the Aspiring Digital Leadership Programme Renée believes that she would have just continued sitting within her own little bubble thinking that she was nothing other than a midwife. But she learnt that she is part of a revolution in bringing digital solutions into healthcare settings.
Looking Ahead to The Future
Renée now looks to the future hoping to become a CNIO, but now she is currently focusing on an MSc qualification. Renée also suggested that we should check in with her to see where she is at and where the career pathways go as well for Clinical informatics roles.
“There is a lot going on out there in the bigger, wider world with the career pathways and the frameworks. So, where it is now might not be where it is at in 12 months’ time.”
“It is definitely a path or a journey that I am on. I am not at my final destination yet, don’t know when I will be. But I keep pressing forward and I wouldn’t have had the confidence to do that without the Aspiring Digital Leadership programme.”
