Jane began her nursing career at the age of 18 when she left school. Over her career she has worked in several areas, including paediatrics and adult care, but the majority of her time has been spent in neonates. She worked for 16 years as a neonatal nurse at Liverpool Women’s University Hospital before leaving to join Clevermed, which is now known as System C. Jane has worked at System C for nine years and during that time, her role has evolved as BadgerNet products and teams have expanded.

Jane currently acts as the Lead Clinical Product Specialist for Paediatrics within BadgerNet. Her role focuses on product development, listening to what sites are asking for, interpreting those needs, working with the product owner on development suggestions, collaborating with engineers while changes are made and then testing those changes. She also supports the service delivery team when issues come in that need clinical understanding.

Before the team expanded, she covered both sides of the role, including product go-lives and dealing with new and ongoing site issues, meaning she has experience across both areas of the service.

Day-to-day role

A typical day for Jane includes meeting with the service delivery support team to review any queries they are unable to answer, attending morning standups with the paediatric product team and meeting with the product owner to discuss what will be included in the next BadgerNet release. She also provides support to answer any problems that have arisen and any changes that need to be reviewed. She is responsible for responding to Service Desk change requests from both Neonatal and PICU sites and testing changes within the system. Her days involve a wide variety of work and constant communication with different teams and users.

Jane’s favourite part of her job is being able to take a problem that a site has raised, help work out how it could work better and then see that improvement implemented in the system.

She thoroughly enjoys seeing the final result and hearing positive feedback from customers. She also values knowing that the changes being made have a positive impact in clinical areas, whether by saving time, helping clinicians find documentation or improving the care they are able to give.

Jane feels her role as clinical input into BadgerNet software development is very important to ensure relevance, accuracy, safety and usability.

Jane’s Favourite Project

One project Jane particularly enjoyed in the past 12 months was the introduction of a new page called Family Social. This was something that had been discussed for a long timeand she enjoyed being able to listen to users, find out what they wanted, work through the various processes involved and help create a page that supports the way clinicians work. She likes projects that are substantial and involved.

Jane’s Advice on Progression

When asked what advice she would give to someone wanting to move into a similar role, Jane said that it is important not to be fearful of change and to be open to new ways of working. In Jane’s case, she said that moving from the NHS into a private organisation can feel like a big leap and she believes confidence in your ability is essential. She also values how often she draws on her clinical background in her current work, regularly putting herself back into a clinical mindset and thinking about how something would actually work on the floor.

Future Plans

Looking ahead, Jane has a new focus on learning more about AI and understanding how it can be brought into systems to enhance them. She is currently enjoying the work she is doing and is looking forward to continuing to develop her knowledge around AI and its applications.
