Early Digital Healthcare Leadership Programme

Our first ever Early Digital Healthcare Leadership Programme (#EDHL2021) took place on 5th October in London. It was a bespoke, three-day, in-person training opportunity for early career nurses, midwives and Allied Health Professionals that are embarking on a career in digital healthcare leadership.  It’s designed to fill a substantial gap in the development of these clinical digital specialists.

EDHL2021 was planned and delivered in collaboration with the Florence Nightingale Foundation - a highly regarded national charity focused on improving health, clinical outcomes, and patient experience by building nursing, midwifery and AHP leadership capacity and capability.

System C sponsored eight customer digital leads this year, amongst which were three nurses, two physiotherapists, two midwives and one pharmacist.

Day one of the programme was about gaining understanding and impact of self on others through Myers Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) assessment and exercises. On day two, the cohort worked with the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts to develop their confidence and communication skills as a leader.  The final day was about developing skills and confidence to lead digital transformation, ensuring the art of healthcare practice remained at the heart of all digitally enhanced practice.

Feedback from the cohort were extremely positive.  All attendees unanimously agreed that the programme gave them practical, applicable, and transferrable skills to use in their digital roles.

I thought the whole programme, every one of the three days, was practical and immediately applicable to my day-to-day role.  Thank you so much for conceiving and designing this programme in such a careful and considered way.

Anna Rubio, Allied Health Professions Information Officer, Frimley Health NHS Foundation Trust

One of the best courses I have been on.  Extremely engaging and relevant to my role as well as providing good resources and networking for future development.

Simon Underwood, Clinical Informatics Pharmacist, University Hospitals Bristol and Weston NHS Foundation Trust

I think this programme is very much needed.  It has addressed issues which we all face on a regular basis. I have found it very useful, and it has made me feel very energised and excited about going back to work, facing the challenges that come my way.  It has also inspired me to approach senior management to start on some new projects which they give no time/attention to.  I feel more confident and keener to go out and practice these new skills.  Thank you for giving us this opportunity.

Ella Bosworth, Lead Digital Midwife, Kettering General Hospital

It has been an amazing three days.  I have been enlightened and met other healthcare professionals and have been able to learn new ways of working.  We have shared experiences which has made me not feel alone in my plight.  The context of the course has been useful, inspiring, empowering, and suitable.  This three-day programme helps in my professional and personal development.

Valuable practical tools.  Recognition of issues in digital care provision is reassuring.  Necessary for ALL clinical digital teams to move towards better collaborative working.  Supports empowering of clinical leaders working with IT teams.

This course provided me with the opportunity to network with others who work in my profession. I learnt about my own personality and how I am seen by others and an insight into what changes I can make to my performance.  All sessions were engaging and what I have learned I can apply directly to ways of working in practice.

Fantastic three days of highly applicable, transferrable, and usable skills.  An amazing opportunity to learn new skills to develop professionally and personally.  Enjoyable and engaging throughout the three days.  Location was great with convenient hotel, well catered for by Florence Nightingale Foundation.  Validating that I am in the right role, doing the right things and am excited to continue.

The course has been fantastic, all of it has been relevant and applicable to my practice.  Networking with other colleagues has been hugely beneficial.  I came to the course with issues around imposter syndrome and the last three days have helped me to look at this differently, in a much more positive way.  Thank you for this excellent opportunity.
