Supporting the NHS Nightingale Hospital Bristol.

10th June 2020

System C has worked in partnership with the NHS to set up the technology required to run the NHS Nightingale Hospital Bristol.

NHS Nightingale Hospital Bristol is a 300-bed facility designed to provide intensive care for critically ill coronavirus patients in the South West region. Hosted by North Bristol NHS Trust (NBT), and staffed by people and volunteers from many NHS organisations across the region, the hospital was set up in April at the University of the West of England’s (UWE Bristol) Frenchay campus.

System C has deployed its CareFlow patient management system (formerly known as Medway), to handle patients arriving at the hospital. This was installed and interfaced with the hospital’s critical care system in just a matter of days.

Nightingale Bristol is also using CareFlow Connect (System C’s mobile instant messaging and care co-ordination app) as a regional referral network, allowing clinicians to refer cases from across Bristol, Bath, Gloucestershire, Wiltshire and Somerset. Care professionals can use the software to complete a standardised Covid-19 referral form, and to attach supporting documentation such as drug charts and photographs. This approach means there is no need for physical notes, and processes are standardised quickly with no risk of virus spread.

Neil Darvill, IT Director for North Bristol NHS Trust, and for the Nightingale Bristol project, said, “setting up a highly-specialised healthcare facility in just weeks is an enormous achievement and testament to the efforts of all involved including System C. The fact that the Nightingale Bristol is digitally-enabled, integrated into our other regional healthcare networks, and paper-free is a particular source of pride, and I’d like to thank System C for showing the same energy and partnership ethos as they’ve brought to our ongoing transformation projects at North Bristol NHS Trust.”

The NHS Nightingale Hospital Bristol was officially opened on Monday 27 April by His Royal Highness, the Earl of Wessex.
