Connecting for Health
Introduced on 1 April 2005, Connecting for Health is a Directorate of the Department of Health. It represents the NHS' commitment to lifelong electronic medical records for patients, round-the-clock access to patient records for healthcare staff and information on best clinical practice for all.
Connecting for health covers more than 8500 general practices and their services to almost 300 hospitals. The aim behind this is to create a more modern, efficient, patient-centric health service, giving patients more choice and control over their own healthcare.
The key objectives of Connecting for health are as follows:
- Better, safer care for patients
- Enable clinicians to increase efficiency and effectiveness
- Allow healthcare professionals greater access to electronic medical records
In order to achieve this, Connecting for health involves working on a number of new systems and services, including:
- Creating a new NHS care records service, to improve the sharing of electronic medical records between practices
- Making it easier and faster for GPs and other primary care staff to organise hospital appointments for patients
- Widespread dispensing of electronic prescriptions
- The digital capture, viewing and storage of x-rays and scans
- Enabling electronic medical records to be transferred directly between GPs when patients change practices
- A new, secure email and directory service
